Michelle Chamberlin
College Supervisor
I joined SPDNS in 2008 as a College Support Worker, supporting students with complex needs at SEC College. Through my experience and commitment to providing high-quality, person-centred support, I progressed to my current role as College Supervisor.
In my role, I manage and support a team of staff working within the college setting. I work closely with SPDNS managers, college staff and managers to ensure that the individual needs of each student are understood and fully supported. I am responsible for planning staff rotas and ensuring appropriate levels of support are available throughout the college day.
A key part of my role is working in partnership with parents and carers to develop and maintain detailed care plans. I ensure that these plans reflect each student’s individual needs, medical needs, preferences and abilities, and I communicate regularly with families regarding any concerns or issues that may arise.
I also provide direct support to students when required. This can include supporting them to understand and participate in their lessons, typing or scribing notes, and helping them to develop independence while ensuring that the student remains at the centre of all support provided. I also assist with personal care, breaks and lunchtime activities.
Where students attend college trips, activities or residential visits, I help ensure that appropriate support is planned and provided so that they can participate safely and confidently.
All support staff and myself take great pride in creating a supportive, respectful and person-centred environment where students are encouraged to achieve their potential, develop their independence and take part fully in college life.
