A day in the life of a Carer

My day usually starts early, I’ll have a quick cup of tea, check my rota, and head off to my first call. Mornings are always the busiest. I help people get up, washed, dressed, and set up for the day ahead. It might sound straightforward, but everyone’s different, so I take the time to do things properly. And a little chat in the morning goes a long way too, sometimes I’m the only person they will speak to all day.

I spend a fair bit of time driving between calls but you get used to it. Every visit is different, one person might need help with their medication and breakfast, while another might just want a bit of company over a cup of tea. Building that trust takes time, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job. You’re not just there to get things done, you’re there for them.

By lunchtime I might be making a meal, doing a bit of light housework, or helping someone get out and about. Even something simple like a short walk or popping to the shops can make a big difference. I always try to encourage people to stay as independent as possible, while still being there if they need a hand.

The afternoons can be a bit unpredictable. Things change, and you’ve got to be flexible. I might be helping someone move around safely, checking in on how they’re doing, or just making sure everything’s alright at home. You’ve got to stay alert and be ready to adapt, it’s all part of the job.

In the evening, I do my later calls which usually means helping with tea, medication, and getting people settled in for the night. These visits are really important, making sure they feel safe and comfortable before I leave.

There’s also the paperwork side of things. I update care notes, flag anything important, and keep the rest of the team in the loop. It’s not the most exciting part of the job, but it matters.

It’s not always easy, some days are long, and it can be tough at times but it’s worth it. Knowing you’ve helped someone stay independent or just made their day a bit brighter makes a real difference.

At the end of the day it’s all about people. Every day is different, every person is different and that’s exactly why I do it.
